Northern Colorado's four Republican congressional candidates will meet in their first debate Thursday, less than six weeks before neighborhood caucuses begin the nominating process.
State Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Yuma, has a massive fundraising advantage over his three opponents, as well as support from Republican leaders in Colorado and Washington.
The other three challengers — University of Colorado Regent Tom Lucero of Berthoud, former Fort Collins City Council member Diggs Brown and Loveland businessman Dean Madere — are largely waging grassroots campaigns to try to build their name recognition before the March 16 caucuses.
The first debate — which begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at Windsor High School — offers the four candidates a chance to build an identity with voters, according to Colorado State University political scientists.
